Smartpost Itella starts using diesel fuel from renewable sources

Itella Estonia switched 10 parcel vans to Neste My Renewable Diesel fuel this year to reduce the company’s environmental impact. Furthermore, the mileage of the package delivery rounds is being optimised to reduce the company’s ecological footprint by at least 10% per year.

“Unfortunately, the transport sector today is still one of the foremost sources of pollution, but we are constantly moving in the direction of reducing the environmental impact of our operations,” said Meelike Paalberg, CEO of Itella Estonia OÜ. The company continuously invests in the development of sustainable parcel delivery solutions to reduce its ecological footprint by at least 10% every year.

“This year, the ten Smartpost Itella vans that were switched to the new fuel are delivering parcels to 150 parcel lockers in Tallinn, Harju County and Lääne County. At least 8 more renewable fuel vans will be added in 2023. In addition, we have acquired an electric van for our fleet,” Paalberg noted.

By using Neste MY Renewable Diesel, a company can reduce its carbon footprint by up to 90% compared to using conventional fossil fuels. According to Paalberg, the planned switch of a total of 18 vans to the Neste MY Renewable Diesel fuel will reduce the company’s CO2 footprint by as much as 39% compared to 2022.

To reduce the ecological impact of its parcel delivery service, the company is also optimising the parcel delivery rounds to reduce the mileage, time and noise of each delivery round. By 2030, Itella aims to be a completely CO2 emission-free company.

Itella Estonia is part of Posti Group, an international group of postal and logistics companies, which has been awarded the EcoVadis Platinum rating that denotes the highest level of sustainable operation.
